Castor oil is produced by extracting oil from the plant Ricinus communis. It has been regarded for decades as one of the best products for hair growth, including eyebrows and eyelashes. Despite minimal scientific evidence for the benefits of castor oil, the multitude of anecdotal evidence supports how valuable it is for hair health and growth.
Benefits of Castor Oil for Hair Care
- Promotes a Healthy Scalp
- Increases Hair Growth
- Prevents Dandruff
- Moisturizes Hair
- Soft, Shiny, Smooth Hair
- Reduces Split Ends
Castor oil contains high amounts of ricinoleic acid. Due to this, it is full of monounsaturated fatty acids, allowing it to act as a humectant, which moisturizes your hair by drawing moisture in from the air into your hair. In addition, castor oil has omega 6 and omega 9 fatty acids which is extremely nourishing for the hair, the follicles responsible for hair growth and the skin of the scalp. Ricinoleic acid is antibacterial and antifungal, which helps to mitigate bacteria and fungus which could impede hair growth. Castor oil is widely recognized for its ability to repair and renew hair cells, while promoting glossy, shiny and luscious locks.
HAIR MASKS
If your hair is dry and damaged, castor oil can do wonders for you (all you fake blondes I’m talking to you). Since it’s so effective at moisturizing your hair, castor oil hair masks make your hair smooth, silky, shiny and beautiful.
If you want to just test it out at first, you can apply a tiny bit to the ends of your hair, leave it in for 30 minutes, shampoo it out and experience the benefits of how smooth it will look and feel.
Castor Oil Hair Mask to Promote Hair Growth

- 7 drops peppermint essential oil
You can also substitute cedarwood, thyme, rosemary or tea tree essential oils to promote hair growth.
Castor Oil Hair Mask for Dry Hair
- 2 tbsp castor oil
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- 3 drops lavender
- 3 drops cedarwood
- 3 drops tea tree
- 3 drops rosemary
Castor Oil Hair Mask for Oily Hair
- 2 tbsp castor oil
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- 6 drops lemon
- 6 drops peppermint
Castor Oil Hair Mask for Shiny, Strong Hair
- 2 tbsp castor oil
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp raw honey
- 1 egg
The protein and vitamins in the egg will repair and strengthen damaged hair.
To wash this mask out make sure to use cold or lukewarm water, using hot water will cook the egg and that is not something you want to deal with in your hair!
HOW TO APPLY HAIR MASKS
- Mix together all the ingredients (make sure the coconut oil is soft or melted).
- Massage it into your scalp and to the ends of your hair.
- Wrap your hair in a bun and cover it with a shower cap, saran wrap or a towel you don’t mind washing right away.
You can leave the mask on either for a half hour, an hour or for an ultra-conditioning effect, you can leave it on overnight. If you are going to leave it on overnight, I recommend putting a towel or an old pillowcase on your pillow to avoid getting oil on your pillow.
When the time of your mask is up simply wash your hair. Shampoo and rinse twice, even three or four times to ensure you’ve washed out all the oil.
Try to resist stroking your soft shiny hair and enjoy!
