Bentonite clay is great for all skin types, especially oily skin and acne-prone skin. It improves the appearance of scars and is a natural and effective exfoliator that provides a soft and smooth glow to your skin.
Bentonite clay is sometimes called montmorillonite and is highly recognized for its ability to heal and detox the body both internally and externally. When ingested it detoxes the body of heavy metals, chemicals and impurities and when used externally on the skin it pulls toxins.
The clay is formed from volcanic ash and is made from minerals including calcium, sodium, iron, potassium and magnesium. The clay gets its name from the largest mineral deposit of bentonite clay in Fort Benton, Wyoming, USA.

BENEFITS OF BENTONITE CLAY
- EXFOLIATING
Weekly exfoliating is important for healthy and glowing skin because getting rid of dead skin cells allows your fresh, smooth skin to shine through. By removing dead skin cells on the surface of your skin, your serums and creams will actually be penetrating into your healthy skin cells.
There are shelves of products that exfoliate but the majority contain harsh ingredients including parabens, irritating fragrances and phthalates. Bentonite clay is one of the best natural exfoliators.
- IMPROVES ACNE
Bentonite clay mask is detoxifying and can treat acne to provide clear skin. Acne is caused by excess oil on the skin, a buildup of dead skin cells and too much bacteria. Bentonite clay improves acne-prone skin because it dries out oily skin, exfoliates skin and is antibacterial.
- REMOVES BLACKHEADS
Since bentonite clay exfoliates and eliminates dead skin cells from the outer layer of the skin it removes blackheads and improves the appearance of clear skin.
- HEALS SCAR TISSUE
If you’ve suffered from acne you may still have scars on your skin but worry no more! This mask can improve and fade scar tissues because bentonite clay has been shown to speed up healing of skin lesions.
- PROVIDES GLOWING SKIN
Bentonite clay effectively reduces redness of the skin and by removing dead skin cells and improving the appearance of acne, scars and blemishes it results in an even smooth skin tone.
BENEFITS OF APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
Similarly, apple cider vinegar is antibacterial because it contains acetic acid which eliminates the bacteria that causes acne. Apple cider vinegar is commonly used as a toner since it balances the pH of the skin, resulting in an even skin tone.
Apple cider vinegar with “the mother” means that it contains beneficial enzymes and proteins that you can see floating around it and is why it is important to shake the apple cider vinegar before mixing it.
Ingredients:
– 1 tsp bentonite clay
– 1 tsp apple cider vinegar (with the mother)
– 1 tsp of water

I recommend apple cider vinegar instead of just water because water does not mix as well and may result in a clumpy mask. The acidity of the apple cider vinegar helps to balance out the alkalinity of bentonite. The directions specify using glass, wood or plastic because mixing bentonite clay in metal bowls or utensils will decrease the effectiveness.
After the mask has been on for a bit you will feel a pulsating sensation but don’t worry, this is good, just imagine the impurities being pulled out of your skin! Don’t be alarmed when your face is red after you take the mask off – this is completely normal and will go away after an hour or two. Since your face does get very red I recommend doing this mask at night before bed.
